It was our 6th wedding anniversary last weekend (yep, I'm a 070707 bride!) and hubby & I escaped without the kiddiwinks to Cardiff for an overnighter.
Back in January, I took advantage of an amazing Facebook offer from The Royal Hotel Cardiff: £35 for a deluxe room (room-only basis) on a Sunday night in 2013....a truly amazing discount - thank you!
Due to the maze of one-way streets and expensive parking within the city, we braved the train! The hotel is literally a 10-minute walk from Cardiff Central train station, and as we were too early to check-in, they were very happy to store our suitcase whilst we explored Cardiff Castle.
Cardiff Castle was beautiful - lots to see & explore, and would be an amazing picnic-spot if we were to visit another time with the children.
The hotel is on St Mary Street which is one of the main streets - lots of bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, shopping arcades, even a Spar & Tesco Express. St Davids shopping mall was mere minutes away too.
When we checked-in and found our room, we were delighted! A beautiful large room, lots of space & light, modern furniture (large leather headboard, glossy black desk, glossy red mirror), large black leather sofa. We even had towelling robes to wear during our stay! It was a little noisy at night as we were located in the heart of the city centre, but nothing unreasonable or unexpected. The gentleman on reception on the Monday was utterly delightful & helpful - a fantastic final impression upon checking-out.
The following day we made the 20-minute walk to Cardiff Bay to explore Mermaid Quay (shopping & eating galore!) and go on the Dr Who Experience - which was amazing, albeit a little scary (I'm not a fan of daleks, eek!). We discovered a quaint little shop called Fabulous Welshcakes selling freshly made Welshcakes (the dark chocolate orange flavour is my favourite). And the Pierhead Centre was hosting a free art exhibition too.
An amazing two days in Cardiff! If you're thinking of visiting Cardiff and would like to ask me a question, comment down below.
